Here is a running list of art terms we are learning about in room 18.

K
line- The path of a moving point. Lines can make shapes. Lines can make patterns.
pattern- The repetition of an element or elements in a regular way in art or nature.
natural shapes- Shapes that come from nature- plants, animals, etc.
collage- an art project made with glued paper that is cut or torn into shapes
above & below- describes location in relation to other objects or shapes
overlap- when a shape covers part of another one

1st
line- The path of a moving point. Lines can make many things. 3 things line can do are make shapes, make patterns, and make movement.
contour line- Lines that outline shapes.
natural shapes- Shapes that come from nature- plants, animals, etc.
stencil- a shape that is made and then traced multiple times to assist in pattern making and background setting creation.
light and dark- opposite values used to make flat shapes look more round and real

2nd
contour line- Lines that outline shapes.
warm colors- oranges, yellows, and reds.
cool colors- blues, greens, and violets


3rd
foreground, middleground, and background- Used to describe the front, middle, and back of a landscape or cityscape.
3d space- A sense of depth in a work of art. It can be done through overlapping, size and detail change.
symmetry- Created when one side of a shape or an object matches the other if folded in half.
natural shapes- Shapes that come from nature- plants, animals, etc.
implied volume- when a shape looks 3d on paper due to the use of light and dark/ tints and shades
3d shape- a shape that looks more round and real than a flat shape
tint- color plus white, used to make a color lighter and to add to implied volume
shade- color plus black, used to make a color lighter and to add implied volume
proportion- describes the relative size and scale of parts in a whole. 
fraction- represents equal parts of a whole. May be used to describe proportions in art. 

4th
contrast- Created when opposites are used in art. It makes parts of an artwork stand out. ways of creating contrast are using light v. dark colors, using opposite colors, using thick v. thin lines
symmetry- Created when one side of a shape or an object matches the other if folded in half.
proportion- the relationship of a part to the whole. Normal proportion is when the parts look they are a good fit within the whole.
positive shapes- the actual things in an artwork
negative shapes- the gaps, openings, or empty spaces in an artwork. A balance between positive & negative shapes are crucial to a good composition.

5th
unity- When things look like they belong together. This can be done by using similar lines, shapes, values, and colors.
variety- When an artist changes things(lines, shapes, values, colors) up to add interest to an artwork. contour line- Lines that outline shapes.
movment- May be created by using repeated lines to show where something has traveled from.
perspective- 3d shapes can be made with lines when sides of shapes are made with diagonal lines. If the diagonals all converge or head to one point in space it is an example of linear perspective.
